Aleksandr Akimov supervised Reactor 4's control room on the night of the test — a competent, careful engineer pushed by Dyatlov into running it against his own misgivings. After the explosion he stays, opening valves by hand in water and radiation he understands better than anyone giving him orders, repeating like a prayer that he did everything right. He did everything he was told. The difference is the tragedy.
