Every strange crime in London seems to have a sponsor, and at a swimming pool at midnight he finally introduces himself: Jim Moriarty, consulting criminal — the spider at the centre of the web, Sherlock's mirror image in the employ of anyone who can pay. He wraps hostages in Semtex as a flirtation and promises, in a sing-song voice that makes seasoned killers flinch, to burn the heart out of his new favourite playmate.
