Haesten (The Dane who survives every side) is a character in The Last Kingdom, part of The Danes. Haesten swears whatever oath the room requires and outlives every lord who believed him — the series' cockroach in a fur collar, oiling between Dane warlords and Saxon courts with a merchant's smile and a knife already sold to the other side. He betrays everyone eventually, confesses cheerfully when caught, and keeps earning stays of execution by being too useful to kill. The show's running joke with teeth: in a saga of oaths, the oath-breaker dies of old age... almost.
