The Corinthian (The nightmare that walked out — teeth where eyes should be) is a character in The Sandman, part of The Dreaming. The Corinthian was built to be humanity's dark mirror — a nightmare with tiny mouths for eyes, designed to show sleepers the worst of themselves — and used his maker's century in a fishbowl to emigrate: a hundred years loose in the waking world, eating eyes and inspiring a fan club of serial killers who hold conventions. Charming, sunglassed and articulate about his own purpose, he is the season's best villain because his argument is almost fair: the dreams escaped their cages. Why shouldn't the nightmares?
