Usami Fuji (The consort who lost everything) is a character in Shōgun, part of Ajiro & the Ship. Usami Fuji loses her husband and infant son in the story's first cruelty — his outburst at court, paid for in their blood, by order of protocol. Granddaughter of Hiromatsu, she is denied the death she demands and assigned instead, for one year, as consort to the barbarian pilot's household. Fuji manages her grief the way she manages his house: with a rigor that is its own kind of mourning, and a dignity the Anjin slowly learns to read.
