Who is Yoshii Toranaga in Shōgun?
The lord who waits · Toranaga's Court
Yoshii Toranaga (The lord who waits) is a character in Shōgun, part of Toranaga's Court. Lord Yoshii Toranaga of the Kanto is the most dangerous man in Japan precisely because he keeps declining to act like it. One of five regents ruling until the Taiko's heir comes of age, he sits in Osaka encircled by four colleagues who have already agreed on his impeachment — which is to say, his death. Toranaga breeds falcons, studies men the same way, and treats every catastrophe as a piece arriving on the board. A barbarian ship has just washed up in his domain, and he is the only regent curious about it.
